Iota Iota Iota Honor Society
We are excited to announce that the Women’s and Gender Studies Department at Providence College has been granted a chapter of the national Women’s and Gender Studies Honor Society, Iota Iota Iota (Triota)!
Established in 1985, Triota has expanded to include 140 chapters across the nation over the past 40 years. The Greek letter Iota was chosen to symbolize the three ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian goddesses, respectively, Inana, Ishtar, and Isis, who together are closely connected to the sun, the moon, the earth, and the sky, and to healing, love, politics, law, and justice, and to protecting women and children, among other key representations and characteristics.
Triota is an egalitarian, national society of scholars dedicated to excellence in the field of Women’s and Gender Studies, and to the WGS principles of interdisciplinarity, intersectionality, and women’s empowerment and gender justice, both inside and outside of the classroom. Triota is committed to upholding feminist values, and to fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where students can connect, research, and build community as they work together towards gender justice, and towards dismantling interlocking systems of oppression.
To be eligible for membership in Triota you must be a WGS major or minor and meet ONE of the following requirements:
- a GPA of at least 3.0 in your WGS major or minor at the time your application is turned in, OR
- a written essay to display interest in Triota as reflective of your passion for WGS/your WGS minor or major, OR
- secure a letter of support/nomination from a Providence College WGS professor.
